Setting up your Paddocks with Prefixes and Descriptions

How to use prefixes and descriptions to customise and manage your farm record keeping.

Updated this week

Using prefixes and paddock descriptions will allow you to customise your reports and your data further, especially if you are running multiple blocks on the same farm. See our Reporting article for a guide on customising your reports.

Note: for more information on the difference between blocks and farms and what would work best for you see Farm vs Block

Paddock Descriptions

You can enter in paddock descriptions to represent which block/farm they belong to. You can see an example of this in the image below.

paddock crop reporting

This will allow you to use the 'Group by' feature in reports to separate your paddocks by the description field as seen above. Subtotals for each different paddock description will be calculated in each report to help make decision-making easy.

Paddock Prefix

Instead of using a paddock description you can add a small distinct prefix to the start of each paddock name. I.e. Wind Farm = WI or Lottery Farm = LOT. You can then use the 'filter' to search the prefix in the paddocks list.

Searching the prefix (using the filter function) can also be used elsewhere for reporting purposes.

Paddock Colours

You may want to make a distinction visually on the map between locations, you can update the paddock colour for a group of paddocks. This will allow you to use the 'Group by' feature in Paddocks List to separate your paddocks by the colour field. However, it's not useful for using as a distinction in reporting further.

Inventory

Running multiple blocks on the one map will mean your inventories are shared. To help distinguish between chemicals, feeds and treatments you can add prefixes and/or a inventory description.

You can then use the 'filter' feature to search for the items belonging to a certain farm/block.

You can also add in the block/farm they are associated with in the description box.

See Inventory for a guide to Adding, Editing, Copying and Archiving items.

Livestock

By adding prefixes to the names of mobs you can filter through your livestock reports on a block by block basis.

Mob Animals

You can do this when you're Adding Mobs or you can edit your existing mob. Management groups or tags may also be a handy workaround for reporting between different paddocks.

Individual Animals

You can do this when you're adding Individual Animals or you can edit your existing animals. Management groups or tags may also be a handy workaround for reporting between different paddocks.
