Livestock Age Classes (Individuals)

How individual animal age classes are defined within AgriWebb

Updated over 2 weeks ago

AgriWebb uses age classes to help you better manage your stock on farm from a management and reporting perspective. Each age class is made up of a number of characteristics including sex, weaning status, fertility status and if they have produced offspring.

Efficient management of livestock involves correctly classifying animals by their age classes and ensuring these are up-to-date.

Getting your animals into AgriWebb with the correct age class and keeping your weaning, castration and birth records up to date, will mean that AgriWebb can automatically age your animals. Take a look at the tables below to see the definition of each age class available.

Manual Updates for Age Classes

When automatic updates do not suit your specific needs, manual adjustments are available. Here’s how you can update age classes;

For individual animals

  • Navigate to the web app and select the animals you want to update.

  • Click on the "Actions" button followed by "Edit Animal."

  • Modify the "Age Class" to match the correct category for your livestock.

For multiple animals

  • Use CSV file to bulk update age classes.

  • The .csv should contain an animal identifier (EID/VID) and its updated Age Class.

  • Once you have your .csv head to the Livestock Tab -> Import Animal Data -> Import Animal Updates and follow the steps to upload your .csv and update their Age Class

Updating animals age classes using the import animal updates feature will update their Age Class for all time.

E.G. if you are looking to manually bulk update a group of heifer calves to heifers via .csv update, their history will only show their heifer age class, not heifer calf.

Resolving date of birth and age class errors

Errors might occur when the Date of Birth (DOB) and age class don’t align. Each age class has specific rules around allowable age ranges:

  • Cattle under 11 months should be classified as Steer Calves.

  • Cattle between 11–12 months should be classified as Steer Weaners.

  • Animals over these ranges but classified incorrectly will trigger a DOB error. If you cannot correctly update the date of birth due to system restrictions, consider categorising your livestock temporarily under a different acceptable class (e.g. "Heifer Weaners").
